A day in the life of an apprentice at Styal Mill

Year 5 had a fab day at Syal Mill, learning all about what it would have been like to be an apprentice.

What was your favourite thing you learnt or did today?

The part I liked the most was when we got to go in the apprentice house. Their beds were so uncomfortable. I enjoyed being a Victorian for the day but I’m glad that I’m not there forever.

The water wheel was a wheel that had water from the river and every time it moved it made the machines work.

There was a machine called the Muire and a boy called John Fonder crushed skull because he was a bit slow and the machine caught up with him

If you were naughty in class you had to put your arms out and hold two heavy, wooden things called Dumbbells and you had to hold them for half an hour!

You had to sign a piece of paper with all the details on so you could get the job. But since they couldn’t read or write because they didn’t go to school, you had to put an x on it.

If you had a tummy ache they would give you something Called brimstone and treacle and then it would explode in your tummy and you’d rush to the toilet. The reason why it explodes in your tummy is because there’s something called sulfer and sulfer is used in fireworks.

They locked all the doors at night so if you needed the toilet then you needed to do it in a chamber pot.

The girls and boys bedrooms were connected so at night they had to lock the doors so girls and boys were separated.
