Thank you once again to those Parents who came to the Homework Forum. We have compiled all your comments and will be implementing changes this half term.  The table above gives you a break down of what the homework will be over this half term.

The recommended time for Year 5/6 children to spend on homework is twenty minutes a night. Although class teachers will only be setting two written pieces of homework a week (1 Topic/English and 1 Maths) you and your child can still carry out homework throughout the week. The table below is just an example of what you may decide to do for homework with your child.

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday
Reading Maths-Written HWK Reading Times tables-10 minsReading 10 mins Topic Research Topic Written HWK Independent writing (a story, poem, diary unaided but within a 20 minute time limit)

We have decided to keep the Maths homework the same with children collecting their own homework from the Year 5 corridor on a Monday and sticking it in their Maths book on the Friday. Many parents felt that they often needed more time to complete topic homework. For this reason Topic homework will be handed out on a Monday and should be stuck into their homework book the following Monday, this will give children more time to complete their homework and also allow staff time to mark and feedback homework.

We are trying to help each child become more independent with their work both at home and in school. With children having access to the internet it can be very easy for a child to use a search engine and then print out many pages on a subject without even reading anything. Therefore, we ask that if your child does use the internet and uses the ‘cut and paste’ option then we ask that they highlight the areas that they feel are important to the topic. In recognition of children completing homework they will each receive a raffle ticket, this shall be done each week. At the end of the Term all the tickets shall be placed into a hat and a prize draw will take place. We hope that this is of use to you and helps clarify what is expected of your child for homework.

Yours truly,

Year 5 Staff

Thank you to all the parents who came to the Homework forum AND also those who have attended the Maths workshops. I shall be looking at the notes made from the homework discussions and will create a  homework leaflet outlining in more detail the structure within Year 5, as well as this I shall also compile a maths strategy booklet to place online and to handout in the new half term. Thanks once again!!  -Mr Woods

Don’t forget to call into the school dinning hall on Wednesday 27th Jan for the Year 5 homework workshop/forum. This will take place at 9:00am and again at 3:45pm. The afternoon session will take place in my classroom (Mr Woods 5MW)

The BIG Question
What is Freedom?
Our topic this term looks deeply into the movement of slaves across the triangular trade route. Before we enter this phase we shall be trying to look at Africa and the people within before Europeans started to trade globally. This, we hope, will help give children an insight/perspective to what Africa was like as a Continent in its own right!

Our BIG Question – What is Freedom Part 1?

This terms topic is split into two parts. The first section will look into the following:-

• Where is Africa & what will we find there?
• Why is it so poor?
