What is freedom?

I think the parents who saw our assembly would agree that it was a very emotional and moving production. Unfortunately our video camera ran out of life on the big day so we are unable to post anything from the performance. We do, however, have some footage of our rehearsal so we thought we would share some of it with the world! Enjoy!!

Unfortunately the video camera ran out of film on the day of the actual performance (we did manage to grab one song though). However, we did record a rough version in one of our rehearsal slots. Here are a few clips from our What is Freedom assembly rehearsals. We hope you enjoy them……..next time we will have to make sure TWO video cameras are rolling!!! Enjoy.

Miss Mattese taught the children this tune when we were studying about St.Lucia. The children altered the words to suit this terms topic.

We are very lucky to have Joe and Mrs fell in year 5 who can use sign language. They taught us how to sign the following song. We hope you enjoy it!!

One of our drumming groups playing the lead part.

Shackles scar me

Love is lost in this racist world

tAken!My soul, without a doubt

Vile masters as they whip and kill innocent people

Everything I love has gone in the blink of an eye

wRecking lives!

You and me both know we’re never going to survive in this racist world.

What slavery means to me by Noor Mehmood-5SK

An extract from our Year 5 Freedom Assembly!

Dear Diary,

I woke up to feel an aching bruise on my head throbbing like mad! I looked for my diary in vain but I coul’nt find it and I knew I was going to have to make the dangerous walk back to the village! It felt like I was walking for days but as the day came to an end I finally reached the village. There was blood all over the floor. As I reached my hut I heard silent whimpering from a basket. I opened it and was overjoyed to see my sister!

Dear  diary                              20th march 1798

I am writing under a small old lonesome tree in the middle of nowhere.Every word I write I’m remebering the past , the happy thing that Iwent by with my family and friends our tribal dances and celebrations but all thses images are fading away. My sister was torn away from me and that was the last thing I wanted to happen to me .She was the only person who was able to make me laugh and play with here but what can I do to change the past.I cant sleep anymore my heart is alway pounding loudly my head is always in  a tizzy.Whenever I hear a sound my forhead get’s sweaty and quickly hide in a bush or behind a tree in case it was the kidnappers. They went off to collect some wood from the forest ,so I took this chance to rip a bigger hole in the sack until it was big enough for me to crawl throogh.I can hear  a sound   i better stop writing and hide quickly i will  write later

bye for now.

In year 5 we have been learning about freedom we had to write in our big Question book what Freedom means what do you think  freedom means

The Atlantic Slave Trade- By Usman

The Atlantic Slave Trade (also known as the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade) was the trading mainly of African people. They were sent to the colonies of the New World that occured took place in and around the Atlantic Ocean. It lasted from the 16th to the 19th centuries meaning it lasted for nearly 4 centuries. Most imprisoned people were shipped from West and Central Africa and taken to North and South America. They were sent to America to work as unpaid labor on sugar, coffee, cocoa and cotten farms, in gold and silver mines, in rice fields or in houses to work as servants. The shippers were:

  • The Portuguese
  • The Brazilians
  • The English
  • The French
  • The Spanish
  • The Dutch
  • The North Americans

Most modern historians estimate that between 9.4 and 12 million Africans arrived in America although the number of people taken from their farmhouse was considerably more.

The slave trade is sometimes called the Maafa, by African and African-American researchers, meaning “great disaster” in Swahili. Slavery involved four continents, four centuries and millions of people.

Most people died on the cargo ships because they were all cramped together and they could’ve spread a flu or a disease which could’ve been easy to spread. Later on they seperated the slaves so they got some space to breathe properly.

african slavery was about 300yrs ago away from there familes to work , in white people,s fields. some slaves got a brake if the master was kind but some slaves didnt they worked from people from africa got took dawn till night , they didnt get no sleep even if they were exsorsted before they were on a ship chaned to the floor or sat up swaying over the waves made some seasick or frowup they were treated badley, they were forced to eat left overs. because at the beggining of the week, they were given rashens of pork fat and rice and a bit of water some slaves were aloud to go fishing and slaves were punished for not doing there work or for nothing they will get whipped
also some slaves were hung with a huck hucked under ther ribs and left to die
